Yesterday afternoon (now Monday afternoon) I called Tom, my associate in XELR8, and had a discussion with him for about an hour. It consisted of the usual, my placing the call and we talk about a variety of things that affect our businesses but we don't talk much about 'the business'. Why is this? Because we've become friends and are a sounding board for each others thoughts, ideas and criticisms. I can always count on Tom to give me personal and honest feedback on my work, and in turn I will always do the same.

So why am I posting this here?

Because he pointed out that there is a great deal of content out there about finding your 'Why', as I have also talked about it myself. He suggested digging deeper to discover a more personal reasoning. He's absolutely correct. And anyone can come up with a generic answer when asked for their motives, but do they themselves know what is at the core of that answer? The why-for-the-why, if you will.

As we continued our conversation my mind was also on this idea. I had certainly found meaning that reached beyond my orginal reasoning for starting down the path of becoming an business owner. It started with wanting to be my own boss, but being the introspective person that I am, I began to realize that over the last 6 months I've found greater meaning. Everyone wants money. Everyone wants security. And many would love to be thier own boss, but these are all generic answers. Anyone can say them. So how did I discover my why, and tie it down to the three that I mention in the post linked above?

Simple. Questions.

I asked myself questions that would dig deeper, beyond the initial reasoning. Developing the skillset of being introspective is essential not only to being able to do this but also to your own growth as a person. And its certainly not difficult. Its about having an internal dialogue with yourself and exploring your feelings and emotions. I realize that this comes easy to me because I'm built that way, thats always been my nature. To nurture and explore my soul.

So I'm asking again, but this time I'm asking the much more introspective question: What is your personally relevant 'Why'?

To help you along I've included a list of the questions that helped me find my answers. I hope that they spark some answers and further questions to help you get down to the core of who you are and why you do what you do. If you're like me, you can do this anywhere and at anytime, but others may need to find a quiet and relaxing place where they can just close their eyes and let their mind wander. Think about the goals you have set or your reasons for having/doing something.

What is a Tax Deduction?

A tax deduction is an expense that is directly related to the running and building of your business.
When you file your taxes, these items will be totaled up, and the total amount will be deducted from your business income. If expenses exceed income, the excess expenses are deducted from the amount of other income on which you pay income taxes.

The IRS Standard The IRS Standard for taking a business tax deduction is VERY simple. Ask yourself this question:
                Is this expense ordinary and necessary for operating my business?

This is the standard the Internal Revenue Code uses in measuring the legitimacy of any business tax deduction. It's quite liberal in its scope. Do not make the mistake of answering this question quickly or lightly. If in doubt as to whether you should take an expense as a business deduction, ask your CPA.

Taking your vacation as a Deduction -  Would you like to take your vacation as a tax deduction? In order for a personal vacation to qualify as a business expense, you will need to work your business while on vacation.

There are varying ways to do so, but you should document your activity. You should consider doing the following at a minimum:

· Preview the Property by completing a hotel, resort, or cruise ship inspection tour.
· Fill out a hotel/resort/cruise ship inspection form.
· Swap business cards with people.
· Gather names and contact information of potential travel customers.
· Keep all of your vacation receipts from the trip.

Preview Properties As a Travel Professional (that's you with your Traverus travel business) tax experts say that you can write off your travel if you preview the property to recommend it to your clients or prospective clients... or if you have Traverus meetings while at the destination. You may even write off the expense of your spouse traveling with you if his/her presence is helpful in building your business. If in doubt as to whether your travel expenses are deductible, ask your CPA.

Undoubtedly, the vast majority of people who become involved in the travel industry do so, primarily, to take advantage of the travel opportunities.  Travel vendors, wholesalers, cruise lines, resorts and tour companies offer various professional courtesies as a means of reaching the travel agent community.  These courtesies are never guaranteed, but, depending on various criteria, such as the time of year etc., and at the discretion of the particular vendor, may be offered at extremely reduced prices.  They make these attractive prices available as their way of introducing the travel agents to what they have to offer.  One of the most popular travel opportunities for travel agents is the “FAM” or familiarization trip.  A typical FAM trip might include airfare, lodging, sight seeing, and even meals.  This gives the travel vendor the chance to “show off”.  Expect the “red carpet” treatment when you go, but be prepared to spend some time taking a complete tour of the facilities (resort, cruise ship, etc.).     

With new cruise ships, theme parks, resorts, etc. being built to meet the rising demands, many more opportunities will become available for travel agents to take advantage of possible discounts and upgrades.  Although many travel suppliers are less visible than others, they are, nevertheless, interested in promoting their products and services.  They may offer discounts to travel agents as a means of distinguishing themselves from their competition.  You may be able to obtain passes to theme parks, dinner theatres, parks, etc. just by identifying yourself as a travel consultant and asking for their special Travel Industry rate.  Some suppliers may request an advance notice of your arrival, in writing, while others may simply require that you provide a business card or Photo ID upon arrival.  In any event, it is your responsibility, when inquiring about special agent rates, to determine what form of identification will be required of you, upon arrival.  This is most important when making hotel and/or car rental reservations.

You will have many opportunities to enjoy your status as a travel professional.  However, there are certain obligations and ethical codes that you will be expected to adhere to.  For example, while traveling, you should conduct yourself in a professional and businesslike manner. If you are asking for an airline upgrade, for example, you are expected to be dressed professionally.  You may be expected to attend a seminar while you are taking advantage of a FAM trip.  These seminars are extremely informative and are designed to educate you. 

An example of a great FAM trip being offered right now is Bali & Hong Kong for a cost of $1,199 plus taxes includes airfare, accommodation at deluxe hotels, most meals, sightseeing and hotel inspections. There are hundreds each year to choose from! This is just one of the perks of becoming a referring agent!

GO BUY A LOTTERY TICKET. (Just remember, most people who do win the lottery end up financially in worse shape than before). I have to be honest, most people, 80% are lazy... DEAF, DUMB AND BLIND LAZY. Just ask internationally acclaimed illusionists Siegfried & Roy. I had the honor of working for them for about 7 years, right up until Roy’s tragic accident in 2003. They were an amazing and inspiring team with a beautiful inner spirit. Roy always said to me, "If you can dream it, you can do it!"


Their story was a rags-to-riches one, because
they chose to dream. Two teenagers from a
war-torn Germany who had a pocketful of dreams
and little else. They reached for the stars and never
set any limits on what they could achieve. They are living examples that anything is possible, if you want it bad enough and believe in yourself. Stay focused on your dreams and don’t let others
knock you down.

Many of us had hopes and dreams when we were younger.
We had ideas of what we wanted out of life. When we were young, we could close our
eyes and anything was possible. We were full of enthusiasm! Did you ever hear a child say, "When I grow up, I want to find a job I hate, work fifty hours a week, get out of shape, have a mediocre relationship, retire, and THEN have some fun?"

What is it you’re hoping for? What would you like to see happen in your life? There are no rules for dreaming and there are no limits. "Our souls speak to us with images," Siegfried told me once. "Our heads speak to us with thoughts. You have to listen to these clues and follow your heart."

   "Everything begins in the heart and mind," says Roy. "Every great achievement began in the mind of one person. They dared to dream, to believe that it was possible. Don’t let negative thinking discourage you. Dream of the possibilities for yourself, your family and for others. If you have a
dream that you let grow cold, reignite that dream! Fan the flames! Life is too short to let it go!"

"You must work hard and be willing to give, and give and give," says Roy. "Don’t even think of receiving – nothing less than a 100% effort will do. After your first true experience of the inner satisfaction that comes from unrelenting effort, you will notice success begins to gain momentum."

It has been nearly three years since Roy's tragic accident during a performance of their record-breaking show "Siegfried & Roy at The Mirage." When asked, "How did he survive when doctors had no hope?" Horn smiles, "The guy upstairs wasn't ready. I was always taught to be strong, that there was nothing I couldn't overcome. You just have to be positive; you just have to believe."

"Nothing is impossible," Roy always said to me, "You must believe in yourself, believe in change, and believe in your dreams, for there is magic within all of us."
